- With the breakup of the Seljuk sultanate of Rum (qq.v.) in the 13th century, various emirs (Turkish military commanders) emerged to found small states in Asia Minor (q.v.). Among these emirates were those of Germiyan, Karaman, Karasi, and of the Ottomans (qq.v.).
